New Changes to an Old Web Site.

Over the past few weeks, I have been rebuilding our web site and staying to a more minimalist look.   The Galleries still need some changes an updates, but the new webs’ foundation is set.

Two Year Break!

A view up our new driveway

A view up our new driveway

Well, I took two years off to make several major life changes. The year we got married Molly and I made the decision that we would step back and take a more serious look at our photography business.    A lot of events have dominated my life for several years before our marriage and the next few years after. Some wonderful, and some not so.   In short, our studio was in a hugely competitive photographic market in the Washington, DC area, and in many of my fellow professional photographers were starting to use some despicable tactics to win over clients.    We stopped work on our new portfolio, even after winning a international commercial photographers award of excellence in 2014.     We sat back and watched the carnage, and even watched some very excellent photographers close their doors.    It was time for a change of pace and location. We are also changing and improving our new photographic work.

Asheville North Carolina became our home.

Over a year and a half ago, during our trip to Nashville TN for a Professional Photographer Convention, Molly and I made a side trip to this Mountain City in Western North Carolina called Asheville. Winter time is not exactly the time to visit a possible new home location but regardless, Asheville won our harts. It’s charm and artsy community was so inviting to us, we could not say no.

A home in the mountains.

In April, we returned back to Asheville, and started the quest of finding a new home for the two of us. We decided early on that we would not get into home that would require any overhauling.   We focused on much newer homes and came across this charming house on a very large yard and forest. This house was like it was built for us. It even had a very large second master bedroom on the lower level with it’s own oversize bathroom and two massive closets.    A month and a half later, we had our new home. But we had a ton of work ahead, called moving.   We moved most of the studio, section by section, but left behind many of our display stands and old lighting. We just did not have room in the move plus we wanted to rebuild our new studio.   December was our final big move, what we considered essential was taken and the rest was donated. Glitter our Norwegian Forest Cat was the last to move. Show rode in my truck to whole trip from Maryland to North Carolina squarely planted in my lap.

This brings us to April or I should say the end of April. This is the first Blog entry for several years and I am hopping that this will not be the last one.   We have so much to do yet with both our new home and massive yard and woods to the final setting up of the studio.    Much more has to be done, from the removal of the carpet and painting the concrete floor white, to hanging two sets of backdrop holders to the walls and ceiling.    We have started to shoot both Portraits and commercial work, but as soon as the studio is complete, then we can set our new hours and start to build a new customer base.

I will keep you informed as to our progress.

We Got Married!

DSC00928

On March 1, 2014, Molly and I had a fun and memorable wedding during our trip to Las Vegas for WPPI. Several of our fellow professional photographers also joined us to celebrate our special day.

Our wedding day was well planned for half the year and the date was a perfect choice having our fellow photographers in town for the yearly WPPI convention and wanting to have a wedding like none other, the day was perfect from morning to our dinner and a great wedding cake.

First Molly had a great makeup session at the Paris Hotel Spa then she put on her beautiful wedding gown by Designer Oscar de la Renta.

We had arranged to take our vows in front of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel Casino by a great couple who own a Company called the Las Vegas Wedding Wagon. After a very brief ceremony by Rev. Danial Peck and taking care of the necessary paper work, we commenced to have some great photos taken by some fellow professional photographers Larry Ankeny and Elizabeth Martin who also were our wedding witnesses.

After some photos of us and everyone involved as well as a few photos with a group of girls having a bachelorette party, Molly and I move on to have our dinner at Mon Ami Gabi.

Thanks to our waiter Shaun, we had one of the most memorable dinners ever. After our main meal Shaun arrived with our petite wedding cake that was exquisitely crafted for us by Maria of Marie’s Gourmet Bakery. Her cake was just heavenly.

Then after a quick taxi ride back to out hotel, we prepared for a week of WPPI.

Again, a very special thanks to these fine vendors.

Oh My It National Donut Day Again

SONY DSC

Oh yes,  I will be celebrating later today if I have any Donuts left.  And yes I was again planning on having a fine photo of a Donut, but the  subject fell victim to my assistant and Fiance.

This fine holiday got started in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I as part of a fundraising effort during the Great Depression.    So on the first Friday of June, we get to celebrate National Doughnut Day.

If you are ready to celebrate during the day like me, you will be delighted to fine quite a few nationally known Donut makers also celebrating as well.

In Kansas and Missouri, Lamar’s Donuts is the place to go.  They will be offering 1 free doughnut, no purchase necessary. The free-donut offer is good for any regular donuts already available.   But the LaMar’s Bars, Bizmarks, fritters and other products made without a center hole are exempted, frankly because they are not Donuts.

Both locally and nationally, we have Dunkin Donuts, just purchase a large coffee and get a doughnut of your choice.    Oh, and don’t forget. DD is launching their new glazed doughnut, egg and bacon breakfast sandwich Friday, too.

Now again for our friends up north and by the way my favorite doughnut shop Tim Horton’s,  this is the Tim Horton’s National Donut Day Coupon Link! .

Shipley Donuts National Donut Day Offer:    Join them as they celebrate our favorite holiday- National Donut Day! Visit any of these participating locations from 5 am- 12 pm (noon) and receive one glazed do-nut, FREE! *This offer is only valid at participating locations. No substitutions. Free donut is valid on glazed only. Excludes all filled donuts, iced donuts, rolls, twists, kolaches and donut holes.

Finally, this year the fine people at Entenmann’s has this National Donut Day  Contest.  They are planning on donating $1.00 to the Salvation Army.   Upon clicking the “like” button, on the Entenmann’s Facebook Page, Entenmanns’s  will donate $1.00 to the Salvation Army, up to $30,000 throughout the Program Period.

So, go out today and celebrate National Doughnut Day.

I know I will, then return to my diet Saturday.

Pastel Dreams is online

dreams_blog

First and most important, I am not going to shoot Boudoir portraits as most other photographers around the country are shooting. Almost every day, more and more photographers are pickup up Boudoir Portraits but only to copy the next photographer. They follow the same approach that is use for lingerie advertisement or use the same concept used in many gentlemen magazines as a template for these portraits. Many of the portraits are neither flattering and in many cases come short of becoming pornographic.

What I am perusing is a style that was popular in the 19 century and is and is once again greatly in demand in Europe. These Portraits are called Victorian or Romance Portraits, other artist call it Bohemian Portraits. Last March, I had the opportunity to meet a very fine British Portrait Painter who has adapted this old style of portraiture in his painting and I simply fell in love with his work and his ideas of what real women truly want in this romantic style of art.

You will not find Vitoria Secret panties being stretch by a stiletto heal or a totally nude house wife only covered by a Chiffon scarf. We will shoot portraits that are romantic and tasteful but beautiful enough to hang on the wall of your home.

We call these portraits Pastel Dreams, and we offer three levels of portraits.

It’s National Doughnut Day!

Oh yah, and I plan on celebrating later today.  And yes I was planning on having a fine photo of a Doughnut, but the subject just looked too good.

So how did this day get started, well in 1938, ‘National Doughnut Day’ was created by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I as part of a fundraising effort during the Great Depression.    So on the first Friday of June, we celebrate National Doughnut Day.

If you are ready to celebrate with me today, you will be delighted to fine quite a few nationally known doughnut makers also celebrating as well.   Locally we have Dunkin Donuts, just purchase a large coffee and get a doughnut of your choice.  At Krispy Kreme, you can get a free doughnut without having to purchase the coffee.   For our friends up north and by the way my favorite doughnut shop Tim Hortons.   If you click on the name of any of the doughnut shops that I mention, I will direct you to a coupon that you can print for that savory doughnut.

So, go out today and celebrate National Doughnut Day.

I know I will.

A Great World Wide Photo Walk This Year!

Saturdays World Wide Photo Walk for Frederick MD was a great success despite the weather.   We had a total of 39 walkers signed up but only 17 showed.   Again the weather was a spoiler and not for those who participated.   Despite being a little rainy, from what I have seen, all of the walkers have submitted some outstanding photos from Saturdays Walk.

A perfect Host

The great people at the Green Turtle were superb and the perfect host for this years World Wide Photo Walk and most definitely I will call upon them again next.    And a special shout out to Ardenn Turano, the Manager of the Green Turtle in Frederick MD and for the special discount coupons for many of out Walkers.   Not only was the Green Turtle a great warm place to return too after walking in the cold rainy day, the staff at the Green Turtle warmed our hearts with warm drinks and great food.     Thank you Green Turtle.

Keep checking here over the next few weeks, I will be posting some of the top entries including my selection of the Grand Prize Competition.

A time to learn, teach and meet old and new friends and colleges.

On the week of Presidents day I will be in attendance of one of the year’s major conference for professional photography, WPPI-2011.   This conference is two weeks of classes, lectures and a trade show aimed towards improving today’s professional photographer’s skills in business, marketing, sales, and photography.   But I will only be attending the second week due to my schedule.  During the week, I plan on taking some photos at many of the events and giving you insight to what I have learned that help improve my Studio.

I Gave to Locks of Love

Yes my famous Ponytail is gone.   Donated to a very worthy cause, Locks of Love.   I also wanted to thank my new freinds at Studio She for helping me with my special contribution and my new style.   All during the Month of December, if you go to Studio She and give a donation to Locks of Love, we will give a half hour in studio portrait session as our ways of saying thank your.
